Google Helping You With Safety, and Giving 2G Bump In Storage

Google offers 2GB free storage for security check

Here is some good news from Google!
They want to help you make sure your Google setting are safer, and they are willing to give 2 more Gigs of storage, on top of their already very generous storage allocation without up-front costs.

If you fill this out by Feb. 17, 2015 you will get 2G more on Feb 28 - they will let you know by email.

This bonus means more combined space on Google:
- GMail
- Google Drive (aka Google Docs)
- Google Map - MyMaps storage (now stored in your Google Drive)

Even if you don't get in on the Feb 17 deadline, it is a good idea to review your Google security settings pretty regularly. Especially if you change phones, laptops, or log in from a friend's house and want to make sure that remove that as an automatically trusted log-in location (you wouldn't want a virus on your friend's computer to be able to log into your GMail 6 months later).

Router - Your DSL-Modem May be Vulnerable

Your DSL modem can help keep you safer on the internet. It faces the internet, but keeps devices inside your house safer.

However, because it is on the internet, any vulnerabilities in the software running on the router, could mean that attackers could impact your router, by adding software.

Also, because it is available by radio waves for a short distance, it could also be attacked from the 'safer' side of the router.

The latest report of D-Link routers being vulnerable for attack, usually only happens if the advanced settings are changed, to allow remote administration of the router. This means going into the web page on the router, often at http://192.168.0.1, logging on, and setting that the web page to make changes to the router is available to the internet - the WAN side of the router.

In the article ID-Link Routers Vulnerable to DNS hijacking They talk about how attackers might be able to force any device on your network to go to other websites, or block you from getting to websites that could allow you to update your router or computers. If you see this occurring, you may need to get updated firmware installed on your router, or you might even need a different router.

One way to keep yourself safer, is to make sure your router is configured to keep you safe. Make sure it has the admin password set. Type to use the best settings as detailed in these pages:
